August 22 - Galatians 6: Implications

Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. (5:25)
I love this practical last chapter. As Paul winds up his letter to the foolish and off-track Galatians, he gives them specific instructions on how to work out the implications of living freely in Christ.
If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. (6:1)
Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens... (6:3)
Don't be impressed with yourself. Don't compare yourself with others. (6:5)
...enter into a generous common life with those who have trained you, sharing all the good things that you have and experience. (6:6)
...let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. (6:9)
...let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith. (6:10)
I'm thankful for the particulars, especially in these areas where I'm susceptible to sin - unforgiveness, selfishness, pride, weariness, and overlooking my community. Paul cuts to the chase and tells the Galatians (and me!) that these are some ways that believers show evidence of God's Spirit at work in their lives. The ultimate proof is in how we love God and love others, regardless of feelings or circumstances.

Lord, how I want Your life to shine through my life. I pray for Your Spirit to fill me and to work these character traits into the details of my life. Empower me to serve You joyfully out of the overflow of what You're doing in my heart.
For my part, I am going to boast about nothing but the Cross of our Master, Jesus Christ...Quite frankly, I don't want to be bothered anymore by these disputes. I have far more important things to do - the serious living of this faith. (6:14, 17)
Amen!
